Finding climate adaptation solutions through serious games

In 2024, Overpin Analytics & Advisory developed a board game that simulated real-world challenges and constraints to enabling climate change adaptation and resilience in fragile and conflict-affected environments. In the game, participants play as different regional leaders of a fictional country, with each region facing unique vulnerabilities such as tribal conflict, violent extremism, and forced migration—issues that are then exacerbated by extreme weather events. The goal of the game is for players to allocate limited resources towards actions that strengthen their region’s resilience in the face of these compound shocks and stressors. The game has been used in a wide variety of contexts, including a multi-lingual 75-person event with the International Visitors Leadership Program, a side event at the Conference of Parties (COP) 29 in Baku, and with the Climate Security Mechanism team at UN headquarters in New York City.

The UN Development Programme’s Climate Security Mechanism is currently using the game to educate participants in its annual Climate, Peace, and Security Academy.
