Driving climate security strategy for impact
Overpin Analytics & Advisory developed the first climate security internal strategy that helped the U.S. Department of State shift from crisis-dominated planning to a proactive climate security posture. Grounded in the Department’s recognition that climate and environmental change affect global stability, resource availability, and human security, the tool guided a recalibration of the Department’s risk assessment model to integrate climate-related threats into diplomatic relations and strategic priorities. It organized the work around a dual approach—bottom-up development of staff literacy and capabilities and top-down leadership that prioritizes prevention and embeds climate risk across foreign policy and national security planning—so immediate responses are complemented by medium- and long-term risk anticipation. The result was a coherent approach aligned with the U.S. Framework for Climate Security and Resilience and built climate-security literacy, integrated climate considerations into long-term policy, and created space for collaboration, smarter resource management, and interagency synergy.
